FAQ
Common questions,
honest answers.
Can you hypnotise yourself?
Yes. Self-hypnosis is a learnable skill. The hypnotic state is a naturally occurring mode your brain already enters — the absorbed focus of reading, the autopilot of a familiar drive, the heaviness before sleep. Self-hypnosis teaches you to enter and use that state intentionally.
Is self-hypnosis the same as meditation?
No. Meditation cultivates open, undirected awareness — observation without engagement. Self-hypnosis is directed: you enter a receptive state with a specific purpose, to rehearse a response or build a state you want to access automatically. They work on different things.
How long does it take to work?
It varies by what you're working on and how consistently you practise. For sleep, many people notice a difference within a week of regular sessions. For deeper habit or confidence work, meaningful change typically takes 4–8 weeks of consistent practice. Self-hypnosis works through repetition, not insight — patience is part of the mechanism.
Is it safe?
Yes, for most people. There are specific circumstances where self-hypnosis is not recommended — dissociative disorders, psychosis-spectrum conditions, and acute crisis. Liminale's onboarding includes a suitability screening to confirm it's appropriate for you right now.
Will I lose control or be made to do something against my will?
No. Hypnosis is not mind control and never has been. You remain aware throughout. You can open your eyes, stop the session, or set aside any suggestion at any time. The stage-show version of hypnosis relies on willing participants in a performance context — self-hypnosis has no operator, no loss of will.
What's the difference between Liminale and apps like Calm or Headspace?
Calm and Headspace are primarily meditation tools — passive listening, open awareness, stress reduction. Liminale uses guided self-hypnosis: structured sessions built around your specific goal, delivered in a receptive state, designed for repetition. If meditation helps you observe your patterns, self-hypnosis helps you change them.
How much does it cost?
Liminale has a free tier. The Power plan, which unlocks all session types and features, is $17 AUD per month. There's no lock-in and you can cancel at any time.
Is this a substitute for therapy?
No. Liminale is a self-practice tool for personal development — not a clinical service, not a treatment, and not a substitute for professional mental health care when that's what the situation calls for. We are clear about this in our onboarding and throughout the product.
